11 Arrested After Death of Activist in Lyon Clash, Political Tensions Rise
Following the death of a 23-year-old right-wing activist, French government has arrested 11 people. After a violent clash in Lyon, he was suffering from serious brain injuries and died later. The violence took place during a clash between far-left and far-right groups near a student event where left-wing parliamentarian Rima Hassan was speaking. Among the arrested is a parliamentary assistant to Raphael Arnault, a member of the "France Unbowed" (LFI) party, which has heightened political tensions as France is set to hold municipal elections and the 2027 presidential election. Although the leader of LFI, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, has denied any involvement of his party in the violence, political opponents from the right and the traditional left have criticized the party, with former President François Hollande calling for a permanent split in alliances with Mélenchon's faction.
